Baby Red Spot Eaten by Great Red on Jupiter

In a great big event for Jupiter, one of the smaller significant spots of Jupiter has been swallowed by the Great Red Spot. It would now seem that spots come and go on Jupiter. If so, there's a good chance you can discover a new one in the future, just like what Filipino Christopher Go did by just taking pictures of Jupiter.

The above picture shows the baby red spot nearing the Great Red one. The picture on the left shows how it was "eaten up" by big brother. You can study the process in the picture sequence.

Jupiter's Upper Equatorial Stripe Disappears

These pictures of Jupiter's clouds were taken by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). It has captured a dramatic change in the upper equatorial band of Jupiter. It appears to have disappeared and merged with the darker bands. Something is going on in Jupiter's atmosphere that we can only guess on. The two white stripes of Jupiter had always been a favorite sight to see by amateur astronomers using their small-aperture telescopes.

Stunning Photos of Jupiter Taken by New Horizons

The New Horizons spacecraft recently sent back photos of Jupiter that are more for art than for science. Still, they awe scientists and artists alike. The first one is a photo of one of Jupiter's Galilean moons, Europa, rising above the clouds of Jupiter. The next one is a detailed photo of "Little Red," the spot that now comes second in popularity from the Great Red. It was first photographed by Filipino amateur Christopher Go after it was created from the fusion of smaller spots. The discovery was later confirmed by experts.

Jupiter's Northern Lights Twice the Size of Earth

Pictured here are Jupiter's northern lights (aurora borealis) which measure twice the size of Earth. Taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, the ultraviolet data is in blue. The magenta flash is a powerful x-ray source taken by the Chandra X-ray observatory. See the animation of a rotating Jupiter on the left. It emits radiation every 45 minutes and was first detected in 1979 by the Einstein x-ray satellite, although the location of the source was unknown. Scientists still don't have an explanation for the emission. It is one of the mysteries of the jovian planet that may take a while to solve.

Tvashtar Volcano Plume on Io

This is a picture of the Tvashtar volcano (top left) on Jupiter's satellite, Io by the New Horizons spacecraft. It is said to be the best and most awe-inspiring extraterrestrial volcanic plume ever captured in a photograph. It was taken last February 28, 2007.
